The news is dire.
It’s a horror show brought to life and delivered to our pockets on social media.
I keep hoping for a general turn towards sanity and rational thinking, but so far no such luck.
I’ll try to stay optimistic.
No such luck… yet.
In the depths of the pandemic I looked at the world around me and in an attempt to cheer myself up made the joke that it seemed like there had been a global gas leak.
The task seemed clear…
act in the best interests of society at large and move the fuck on.
But that’s not what happened.
Now, don’t get me wrong, gas leaks are very dangerous.
I’m referring to gas leaks on television and in movies that just make people stupid and it’s funny.
Of course, like many funny things on television and in movies in real life they can be quite distressing.
For example…
Only Murders In The Building is very fun to watch.
Living in an apartment building where people are constantly being murdered?
Less funny.
But as I look around at the world it seems like there is a distressing number of people who are acting like some sort of global nitrous oxide gas pipe has just broke loose.
To be honest, it has felt like the leak started a number of years ago when people became suddenly terrible judges of character and thought “Wouldn’t it be funny if a notoriously crooked and morally sketchy businessman ran the world’s most powerful country?”
But of course, it’s not all Donald’s doing.
It’s like the rise of social media increased the the speed of information which was being thrown at us and our brains just couldn’t keep up and we all became idiots.
I think that has been the biggest societal casualty of social media…
We’ve become terrible judges of character and context.
I see it in Canadian politics, US politics, UK politics and many more.
Politicians that we wouldn’t have dreamt of having a beer with a matter of a few years ago, are now leading in the polls.
Leading in the polls despite very evidently being absolutely self-serving sentient used tissues.
To modify an old saying… we can’t see the dickheads for the dicks.
Is it all because of social media?
Are we getting bombarded with so much information so quickly that our ability to judge the character of someone has been rendered useless?
Or has there been a global gas leak?
I’m pulling for the gas leak because at least we can eventually turn that off.
