The haziness of the past few years where Canada limped through the pandemic, uncovered (for some) the horrors of residential schools and witnessed the seemingly rise of dickhead culture had us lurching from the unknown to overwhelming guilt to outright depression.
It created a desire for the concrete. A desire for things to either be this or that.
Rarely is anything in life this or that.
It’s usually somewhere in-between…
or a mix…
or sometimes this and then sometimes that.
Sure some things are concretely this or that but few and definitely not all.
Canada is not a this or that.
Canada is a work in progress that will never be completed.
We are not, despite appearances sometimes, settled in our old ways or trapped by tradition.
We are open to changing things that need to be changed to make life better for our family, friends and neighbours.
We are happy to lend a hand because we recognize that helping make life better for others makes life better for all of us.
We are in a constant state of flux.
With lots of flux left to give.
We are a nation with no one identity apart from a shared desire to fix this sorry ass life for the better and THAT is our identity.
That’s wonderful.
That’s Canada.
That’s what we celebrate.
Happy Canada Day.

“We are a nation with no one identity apart from a shared desire to fix this sorry ass life for the better and THAT is our identity. “
Should be the last verse in our national anthem.
Agreed and we all know how bloody lucky we are to call this wonderful place home .
