ONE SILVER LOCKET
I’m not rich.
I’m comfortable but I can’t just spend willy or nilly. I need to plan for dry spells. One of the joys of being self-employed is that I may have a windfall and then literally months with not a penny coming in.
But again, I’m comfortable.
As you likely know, I’ve been doing this ChristmasWishTree.com project for two years now. It’s super simple. Women’s shelters and second stage housing that will have kids staying with them over the holidays send me their Amazon Wish List with items picked out specifically with certain recipients in mind.
It’s either stuff they’ve asked for when prompted or stuff the shelter knows will be appreciated.
You scroll the list, grab some items, choose the Gift Registry Address for delivery and boom… you just saved Christmas.
Of course, it’s SUPER fun to find a Peppa Pig or a specific toy that you know some kid has asked Santa for, but there are also some items on there for the Moms.
Take a second and think of how shit things would have to get to decide to leave your home, uproot your kids and check in to a shelter.
That is no small decision.
The shelters do amazing work but they are no five star hotel. I’m sure it feels like a lateral move to many women at first…
I was scanning one of the wish lists the other day and noticed a silver locket. Very modest. Silver chain, silver locket. Probably silver plated, I’m guessing…
Someone had chosen THAT specific locket.
What pictures would they put in the locket?
How much strength would they draw from pausing in hard times to open the locket and look at those pictures, or simply by clasping it?
SO much hope in that one silver locket.
It was $49.99.
That’s it.
I’m not rich… but our kids have never went without. Shannon and I have never went without. Christmas morning, despite the stress and anxiety some years, has always been joyful.
I bought the locket. Chose gift wrapping and signed the card from Santa.
Who’s Christmas morning will you save?
