ROARING TWENTIES 2.0
I was midway through my second bite of gnudi when it hit me.
We were in a swanky cool but casual restaurant that is in an old bank. The 40’ ceilings, proximity to the open kitchen’s considerable ventilation, and required proof of vaccination to dine in put my covid concerns at ease.
I looked around the busy restaurant at smiling faces. People chatting, laughing, eating… on dates, with friends, with partners… there was a subdued celebratory vibe. People there didn’t seem to be celebrating a special occasion. They seemed to be celebrating the moment. Celebrating each other’s company. Celebrating each word and expression that came from their tablemates.
I remembered back to a conversation I had had with an Infectious Disease specialist (yes, that is an odd thing to do in the middle of a fabulous meal) about three months ago. They mentioned that provided we were smart and safe, we would soon enjoy an on-ramp out of pandemic life and then suddenly find ourselves in the Roaring Twenties.
I looked around again and thought to myself… I think it’s starting.
Good times have been few and far between for many throughout the pandemic, but they are returning. I know we’re not done with covid. I know we’re going to have to keep our guard up a bit and throw a few more punches its way, but… we’re winning.
Now, if you’re prone to fretting, let me soothe your worries. Though the previous Roaring Twenties led to some spectacularly bad times (depression, WWII), there is nothing that dictates we will be forced to repeat that. The 2020s will not be the same as the 1920s as they were not the same as the 1820s, etc etc.
Destiny doesn’t care what year it is. Destiny is crafted by what we’ve learned and the choices we make.
So, let’s enjoy this time and each other. We’ve earned it.
