TRASH, RUMOURS, AND GOSSIP
or How To Describe Current Politics in Three Words plus Why We Don't Play Wii Bowling Anymore
The current governments of both Canada and the USA could be toppled by any level-headed and non-ridiculous opposing party.
If this is true, they seem to be in no danger.
Voters, with little regard to reason, due diligence and logic, always want change after a while.
This is understandable.
Familiarity breeds contempt as my Dad would often recite.
This familiarity in relation to voters and our current governments is akin to being in a life raft which has leaks and we, the occupants of said life raft, instead of patching the leaks, vote to jump overboard and swim to another life raft with the same number or more leaks but they’re new leaks and that really feels like we’re doing something.
Former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney spoke with, and glowingly about, Prime Minister Trudeau yesterday saying, “I have learned over the years that history is unconcerned with the trivia and the trash of rumours and gossip floating around Parliament Hill. History is only concerned with the big ticket items that have shaped the future of Canada.”
I agree.
I was not a fan of Mr. Mulroney’s when he was Prime Minister however I never felt he would be the absolute ruin of Canada.
As well, he was, admittedly, the best choice at the time.
This echoes my feelings about the current governments in both Canada and the USA.
There’s a stupid game we play in our family where someone, usually our youngest son Gregor, asks the question “Would you take a picture with… (insert name)?”
It is a stupid game. The name inserted is usually a contentious character but sometimes it’s just someone that may not align entirely with our views.
I would take a picture with Brian Mulroney.
I am sure he will be relieved to hear this.
I didn’t like a lot of things he did as Prime Minister but I don’t feel he was entirely self-serving and focused solely on winning power for power’s sake (despite stories shared with me about how fiercely competitive he is).
There is nothing wrong with making an effort to win.
It’s why you won that’s important.
At least in politics and Nintendo Wii Bowling.
I knew someone who figured out how to cheat at Wii Bowling.
A strike every damn time.
It made playing the game with him a waste of time.
He won every game but not because he was sharing the fun family experience of Wii Bowling with all of us playing but rather just so he could say he won.
So we just stopped playing Wii Bowling.
I’ve met and chatted with a number of opposition party members.
Many of them want to make things better.
However, they’re currently being drowned out by trash, rumours and gossip being spread by the loudest voices of those who think they’ve figured out a way to waggle the Wiimote of voters.
The good news is…
I think most of us aren’t interested in playing that game any more.

How so very true. I don't even know whom to vote for, next election. If only we would have the choice of a socially progressive, fiscally conservative, and transparent and accountable political party. No such luck, eh?
Okay, then there is no hope
